I think it really depends on what your target audience is with your blog. One of the most important thing in any form of marketing is knowing your audience. For example if howard stern had a blog it would probably be a lot different than that of a religious leader. But as a general rule it is always best to use caution with any blog post.
I'd have to disagree with you about using caution with every blog post. Part of blogging is to engage readers and excite them to respond. You're right in the fact that you don't want Howard Sterm commenting on religious opinion, however a blog is a forum where you can have an opinion on an issue that might make some people disagree with you. From there, you can get a conversation going that will engage others.
